Yelda Karataş is a graduate of the Galatasaray College of Management. Beginning as a commercial writer, she worked for twenty years in the advertising world as a creative director, and is a recipient of many honorable awards.
Ms. Karataş served in a number of respected advertising agencies, working across a broad spectrum of sectors, from finance to automotive, cosmetics and food. She served as president of the advertising department at Akademi Istanbul, as well as of its communications group. Since the 1980s she has published her experiences as well as her poetry in many different magazines.
Her first book of poetry, “Ürperme,” (“Tremor”) won the Orhon Murat Arıburnu Poetry Award; her second book “Alacaydınlık” received the World Globus Poetry Award. Her third book, “Enel Aşk” (I Am Love), was published by Okyanus press, her fourth book, “Bir Kadın Kaleminden Şems ve Mevlana” (Shems and Mevlana from a Woman's Pen) was published by Alfa Press, and he fifth book, “Hüzün Suretleri” (Toplu Şiirleri) (Faces of Grief (Collected Poems)), from Telos Press. In the 1990s, she has given seminars on life.
She worked with Turkish singer Sezen Aksu as a lyricist on her albums “Deli Kızın Türküsü” and Işık Doğudan Yükselir; and wrote the lyrics to many songs including Kalbim Ege'de Kaldı, Aşkları da Vururlar, Davet, Son Sardunyalar, Yarası Saklım. She also worked as a lyricist for an album of compositions by Anjelika akbarr and Can Atilla, and contributed a poem, “My Way,” to percussionist and composer Yinon Muallem's latest album. She presently writes articles on poetry, communications and art for a variety of periodicals and web sites.
Ms. Karataş volunteers at the Kasımpaşa Multi-Program High School, where she gives lessons and workshops in reading, short story, novel and poetry writing, and directs the theatre group. In 2007, she received Grand Prize in the 10th Mainchi International Haiku Competition. She received the Mitos-Boyut Theatre Press 2007 Honor Award for her work, “Vahşi Komedi” (Savage Comedy). During the same year, she received First Prize in the Hacı Bektaş Veli Commemoration Festival Metered Poetry, Free Meter Poetry and Prose Competition with her piece, Gecenin Sütü Öyküsü. Her latest book, “Öte Çağın Gülü” (Rose of the Next Era), which will represent Turkey at the 8th International Paris Poetry Festival, 2008, tells of the world of the future.
